What doesn’t InsureandGo Australia’s over-50s travel insurance cover?

Travel insurance does not cover every situation, even if you purchase an optional extra. Examples of situations where cover may not apply include:

Not covered

  • Undeclared or unapproved pre-existing medical conditions
  • Travelling against medical advice
  • Moped and motorbike incidents if you ride without a helmet, without the appropriate licence, or on a motorcycle over 500cc without the Activities Plus upgrade. You must also hold the equivalent motorcycle licence in Australia
  • Natural disasters without the upgrade
  • Alcohol and drug-related incidents arising from your use of drugs other than as directed by a treating medical professional
  • Unattended belongings left in a public place including on the beach or beside a pool
  • Excluded activities such as motocross, cliff jumping, paragliding alone and skydiving alone (always check the full activities list in the PDS before you travel)
  • Travel to destinations subject to a 'Do Not Travel' advisory from the Australian Government. Check Smartraveller for the latest advice on your destination

Exclusions, limits and conditions vary by policy, so always read the PDS and check the activities list before you buy and before you travel.

Pre-existing medical conditions cover for over-50s

InsureandGo Australia offers different levels of cover for approved pre-existing medical conditions. Cover only applies if your condition has been approved through the medical assessment process when you request a quote, and must be shown on your Insurance certificate.

A pre‑existing medical condition includes any of the following:

  • Any medical condition for which medication or treatment, advice, tests or investigation has been prescribed in the 2 years prior to policy issue date, including but not limited to any:
    • heart-related, blood circulatory or diabetic condition; or
    • neurological condition (including stroke, brain haemorrhage or epilepsy); or
    • respiratory condition; or
    • arthritis, back pain or osteoporosis; or
    • bowel condition (including Crohn's disease or IBS); or
    • psychiatric or psychological condition (including anxiety or depression); or
    • cancerous condition, and
  • Any condition for which there has been referral to or consultation by a doctor, specialist or surgeon in the 12 months prior to policy issue date.

It does not include acute conditions that have resolved, such as a cold or flu. Cover for overseas medical expenses as a result of COVID-19 is available on all levels of cover for our international Single trip and Cruise policies, and on the Silver and Gold levels of cover for our Annual Multi trip policies.

Not sure if your condition qualifies? Our quick online medical assessment will guide you through the process. You should also consult your doctor for guidance prior to purchase.

InsureandGo Australia does not provide medical cover for trips within Australia, because Australian residents are covered by Medicare or private health insurance.

What our customers are saying

★★★★★

"Competitive Pricing and Suited for Seniors.

We find the application process thorough but fair and the pricing as advertised by the Senior organization to be competitive. As there is no discrimination based on age it is a policy that really differentiates from other offerings. Happily, we have never needed to make a claim so far so we cannot comment there, and of course would prefer not to!"

★★★★★

"Good Travel Insurance Policy.

We have used InsureandGo for 8 trips in the past and, including two in the last 12 months. We have also taken policies for two further upcoming trips. The cost of the policies (for an older age group) has always been reasonable and competitive. Taking out a policy online is relatively easy, including dealing with pre-existing conditions. Fortunately, we have only had two minor medical claims in the past and these were easily lodged and settled quickly. Overall, very happy with them so far."

Frequently Asked Questions

What's typically covered under a travel insurance policy for over-50s travellers?

Depending on the policy and level of cover selected, cover may include overseas medical expenses, trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical evacuation, lost or delayed luggage, rental car excess and selected sports and activities. Terms, limits, sub-limits, exclusions and excesses apply. Refer to the PDS for full details.

Is travel insurance compulsory for over-50s travelling overseas?

No. Travel insurance isn't compulsory for Australian travellers, but Smartraveller recommends taking out appropriate travel insurance before you travel overseas. Without it, you could be responsible for significant medical and other unexpected costs.

What should I do in case of a medical emergency abroad as an over-50s traveller with InsureandGo Australia travel insurance?

If you require emergency assistance while travelling, please contact InsureandGo Australia’s 24/7 emergency assistance team as soon as possible. For non-urgent claims, you can submit your claim online after your trip. Supporting documentation may be required.

Can I extend my travel insurance policy if I decide to stay longer overseas?

In some circumstances, you may be able to extend your policy while travelling. Extensions are subject to eligibility requirements and must be approved by InsureandGo Australia. Contact the customer service team as soon as possible if you wish to extend your cover.

Does travel insurance provide over-50s with cover for adventurous activities like cruising, hiking or skiing?

150+ sports and activities are covered as standard under our policies. However, some higher-risk activities – including recreational skiing, scuba diving, motorcycling over 500cc and multi-day trekking - require an Activities Plus or Winter Sports upgrade.

If you are travelling on sea or ocean by a commercially operated passenger vessel (other than a yacht or sailboat) outside of coastal waters (3 nautical mile limit) and longer than overnight, you will need to purchase a cruise policy.

Always check the PDS before you travel.

How do I make a claim on my travel insurance policy while overseas?

If something happens while you're travelling, contact our emergency assistance team if immediate help is needed. Once your trip is complete, register your claim as soon as practicable - ideally within 30 days of your trip ending - and provide the supporting documents requested, such as proof of ownership, receipts or medical reports.

How much does travel insurance for over-50s cost?

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, including your destination, trip length, age, level of cover, optional upgrades and whether you have approved pre-existing medical conditions. You'll receive a personalised premium when you get a quote.

Does travel insurance cover my hospital bills if I get sick or injured overseas?

International policies include cover for overseas emergency medical expenses and treatment if you become unexpectedly sick or injured during your trip, subject to the policy terms, conditions and exclusions.

I'm only travelling on a short trip overseas. Do I still need travel insurance if I'm over 50?

Even on a short trip, unexpected events such as illness, injury, lost luggage, delays and cancellations can happen. Travel insurance can help protect you against these unexpected costs, regardless of the length of your trip.

Does travel insurance for over-50s cover natural disasters or trip disruptions?

Natural disaster-related cancellation benefits are only available if you've purchased the Natural Disaster upgrade and it's shown on your Insurance Certificate. Trip disruption cover varies depending on your policy and the circumstances of your claim.

What is the best travel insurance for over-50s?

The best travel insurance is the one that suits your destination, travel plans and individual needs. When you’re choosing travel insurance, consider factors such as overseas medical cover, pre-existing medical conditions, cancellation benefits, cruises, planned activities and how often you travel.

When should I buy travel insurance for my over-50s trip?

Cancellation cover starts from the moment you purchase an InsureandGo Australia policy. The earlier you buy your policy, the longer you'll have access to cancellation cover for eligible events that occur before you depart, subject to your policy terms.

Do I need cruise cover for an over-50s cruise holiday?

If you're taking a cruise by sea or ocean longer than one night, you won’t be covered if you haven’t selected our Cruise Travel Insurance policy. Cruise Travel Insurance covers events such as delayed departures, missed ports and cabin confinement. InsureandGo Australia’s standard travel insurance does not include these benefits.

How do alcohol or drugs affect my cover?

Your policy won't cover claims arising from the use of drugs other than as directed by a treating medical professional. Alcohol and drug-related exclusions also apply in certain circumstances, so it's important to read the PDS before you travel.

Am I covered if any of my personal items are stolen overseas?

Yes, our policies can provide cover for lost or stolen luggage. There is no cover for items left unattended in a public place. Limits, sub-limits, conditions and exclusions apply, and you'll need to provide evidence to support your claim.

Are pre-existing medical conditions covered for over-50s travellers?

All pre-existing medical conditions are considered for cover. Simply complete the online medical assessment when getting a quote. Depending on the outcome, your condition may be covered. If your pre-existing condition is accepted for cover, you may have to pay an additional premium. Cover only applies if it has been approved and is shown on your Insurance Certificate.

Is there an upper age limit on InsureandGo Australia travel insurance for over-50s?

Yes. Most InsureandGo Australia policies are available for travellers up to 100 years of age. Bare Essentials and Cruise policies are available for travellers up to 79 years of age.

Can I get an annual multi-trip policy if I'm over 50?

Yes. If you're planning multiple holidays throughout the year, an annual multi-trip policy can be a convenient alternative to buying separate policies for each trip. International Annual Multi-Trip policies are available with a maximum trip duration of 30, 45 or 60 days, depending on the level of cover you select.
