Coverage for pre-existing medical conditions

As you get older, pre-existing medical conditions become an important part of choosing the right travel insurance. InsureandGo Australia considers all pre-existing medical conditions for cover (subject to assessment and acceptance).

What is a pre-existing medical condition?

A pre-existing medical condition is any condition for which you’ve received medical advice, treatment or medication in the last two years. If the condition was diagnosed more than two years ago but you’re still receiving advice, treatment, medication or follow-ups, it’s still considered a pre-existing medical condition. Refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for the full definition.

How do I apply for cover for pre-existing medical conditions?

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you can apply for cover when purchasing your policy by completing a medical questionnaire. Once assessed, we’ll let you know whether cover can be offered for the conditions declared. To cover these conditions, you may be asked to pay an additional premium. We don't provide cover for pre-existing medical conditions unless they are declared, accepted by us and any required premium to cover those conditions is paid.

Simple medical questionnaire

The medical questionnaire can be completed online or over the phone during your application. You don’t need to provide a medical certificate upfront – simply answer the questions accurately so we can assess your cover. You’ll receive an outcome before finalising your policy, so you can decide if the cover offered suits you.

Travelling with grandchildren

Taking the grandkids on holiday? Whether it’s a beach break in Australia, a cruise or an overseas adventure, InsureandGo Australia can help you look at travel insurance options for travelling together.

If your grandchildren are under 18 and travelling with you, they can be included on your policy during the quote process, at no additional premium§.

Seniors Travel Insurance FAQs

What should seniors consider when choosing travel insurance?

InsureandGo Australia offers comprehensive and affordable coverage for those in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond. Seniors should choose travel insurance that reflects their destination, trip duration and individual circumstances. It’s important to check the age limits for each level of cover, declare any pre-existing medical conditions, confirm your destinations and travel dates, and review the cover available for medical expenses, cancellation, luggage and activities.

Are there any discounts for seniors?

We offer discounts to eligible members of Seniors Australia. If you are aged 64 or over and hold a valid Seniors Australia membership card, you may be entitled to a discount when purchasing your policy.

Is there a specific seniors travel insurance policy I need to purchase?

No. There isn’t a separate seniors policy. Simply choose the trip type and level of cover that best suits your journey and specific needs, whether that’s Single Trip, Annual Multi-Trip or Cruise insurance.

Is there an age limit for purchasing travel insurance?

Yes. Age limits depend on the level of cover selected. Bare Essentials is available to travellers aged 79 years or under on the date of application. Silver and Gold policies are available to travellers aged up to 100 years at the date of application, depending on the type of policy selected.

Can I customise my policy with additional coverage options?

Yes. During the quote process, you can add optional upgrades such as Activities Plus, Natural Disaster Cover or Winter Sports Cover for an additional premium, allowing you to tailor your policy to suit your trip.

Can I get cover for my pre-existing medical conditions?

Pre-existing medical conditions are considered for cover (subject to assessment and acceptance) on Single-Trip International, Cruise and Annual Multi-Trip policies. To determine whether your condition can be covered, you’ll need to complete a medical assessment during the purchase process, either online or over the phone.

Cover for pre-existing medical conditions is not automatically included and may be offered at an additional premium. Please note that Domestic policies do not include cover for medical expenses in Australia.

What is a pre-existing medical condition?

A pre-existing medical condition is any condition that a reasonable person would be aware could lead to a claim at the time of purchasing the policy.

This includes any condition for which medication, treatment, medical advice, tests or investigations have been prescribed in the two years prior to the policy issue date. It also includes certain serious conditions, such as heart, neurological, respiratory, cancerous or psychiatric conditions, and any condition that requires referral to or consultation with a doctor, specialist or surgeon in the 12 months before purchase.

It does not include short-term conditions that have fully resolved, such as a cold or flu.

If cover is refused for my pre-existing medical condition, am I still covered for my trip?

If cover cannot be offered for a specific pre-existing medical condition, only claims directly or indirectly related to that condition will be excluded.

You’ll still be covered for other insured events under your policy, including new medical conditions or accidental injuries that arise during your trip, subject to the terms, conditions, limits and sub-limits of the policy.

I have an elderly parent. Am I covered if I need to cancel my trip due to something happening to them?

You may be covered for cancellation prior to departure due to the unforeseeable death, illness or injury of a parent who lives in Australia and is in Australia at the time.

How do I make a claim if something goes wrong during my trip?

If something happens during your trip, you must register your claim within 30 days of completing your trip and provide supporting documentation to substantiate the loss.

Supporting documents may include receipts, medical reports, police reports or written confirmation from an airline or transport provider for delays.

You can submit your claim through our online eClaims portal. Alternatively, you can download a claim form and email it, along with copies of your supporting documents, to claims@insureandgo.com.au.

1 Children (including fostered or adopted children) travelling with either their parents or grandparents will be provided with travel insurance cover for no additional cost (any pre-existing medical conditions may incur an additional charge). This is provided they are under 18 years of age, named on the Policy Schedule and are financially dependent on either their parents or grandparents. No cover is available for children who are born overseas during your trip.

2 When two or more adults are travelling together as part of either a couple or a family group, then each adult will benefit from a 10% discount on the standard individual premium for the selected level of cover for that particular trip before calculating the overall premium for the group. The 10% discount does not apply to individuals travelling with their non-adult children, who will, however, be covered at no additional cost.
