Why consider travel insurance for your Fiji trip?

Fiji may feel like a home away from home, but as with any overseas holiday, things may not always go to plan. Medical facilities outside of Suva and Nadi may be limited, and in some cases, treatment or evacuation back to Australia could be required, potentially at a significant cost. Travel disruptions, lost luggage and trip cancellations can also impact your plans. Travel insurance may help provide protection.

Having appropriate cover in place can help support you if things don’t go as planned, so you can focus on enjoying every moment.

Understanding Fiji’s healthcare system

Before swapping the daily grind for island life, it's worth understanding what Fiji's healthcare system can – and can't – offer if you need medical attention while you're away.

Medical care standards in Fiji are not as high as in Australia. Many hospitals provide only basic care and can lack specialist and diagnostic equipment and a reliable supply of pharmaceuticals. It's also worth noting that most hospitals may require a payment guarantee, confirmed medical insurance or an up-front deposit before admitting patients.

Rescue and emergency services are not as wide-ranging as in Australia and ambulance services are limited. If you become seriously ill or are involved in an accident, you may need to be medically evacuated back to Australia.

For divers, Fiji has two hyperbaric chambers located in Suva and in Nadi. You should always dive well within safety limits and ensure your travel insurance covers diving-related costs and medical evacuation.

Having comprehensive travel insurance in place before you travel can help ensure you’re better prepared in case you need medical assistance.

Protect your Fiji holiday from the unexpected

From snorkelling crystal-clear lagoons to island-hopping adventures, Fiji offers no shortage of ways to stay active on holiday. The good news is that cover for many activities is automatically included in our policies, so you can make the most of your trip without worrying about whether you've added protection.

Automatically included activities relevant to a Fiji holiday include:

  • Snorkelling
  • Scuba diving (qualified, maximum depth 30m, not diving alone)
  • Scuba diving (unqualified but with a qualified instructor, maximum depth 30m)
  • Jet boating and speedboating
  • Shark cage diving
  • 4WD driving
  • Bungee jumping (up to three jumps)
  • Coasteering (recreational only)
  • Quad biking
  • Gorge walking (supervised)

Need even more adventure?

Some activities require the addition of our Activities Plus option. For Fiji travellers, this may include:

  • Scuba diving between 30m–50m depth (under the direction of an accredited dive marshal, instructor or guide; or, if qualified, within the guidelines of the relevant diving or training agency and not diving alone)
  • Kiteboarding
  • Hydrofoiling
  • Tandem paragliding, hang gliding and skydiving

Cover while participating in activities is subject to policy terms and conditions, including following safety guidelines, using recommended safety equipment and participating as an amateur. Participating in a professional sporting activity is not covered.

See the full terms and conditions in the PDS for the complete list of covered activities.

What our customers are saying

"I was getting completely overwhelmed by who to choose for travel insurance, but when I saw the reviews and feedback for InsureandGo, it made it so easy to make my final choice. Their value for money, including great coverage and history of easy claiming, made it the only choice really.

The sign-up process was even easier, once I chose my options it was as easy as clicking to confirm and my policy documents were emailed straight to me. The policy compares well, with much higher coverage than most companies."
