Does your insurance cover damage to a rental car?

Our Silver and Gold policies cover your rental car excess for up to $4,000 and $8,000, respectively ($7,500 for Domestic Gold level), but not for motorbikes.

For a rental car to be covered, you need to make sure that it is insured (confirmed by the rental company), as we do not pay for full damages to a rental car, only your excess.

I’m taking out the top cover, am I covered for anything that can go wrong on my trip?

Our premiums would be astronomical if we could do that! For full details of the benefits, terms and conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions that may apply, please refer to the relevant Combined Financial Service Guide and Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

Why is travel insurance important for my trip?

Travel insurance can help manage unexpected costs that may arise during your journey, particularly overseas medical expenses, which can be significant in some countries. It can also assist with other unforeseen events such as trip cancellations, lost or delayed baggage, and travel disruptions due to natural disasters or emergencies, and can offer a layer of financial support when plans change unexpectedly.

The Australian Government or Medicare won’t be able to help you with overseas medical expenses. While Australia has several reciprocal healthcare agreements with other nations, these do not provide financial assistance for medical repatriation back to Australia to receive treatment.

Some countries might ask you for a copy of your insurance before granting travel visa applications. Visit Smart Traveller for country-specific requirements before applying for a visa.

Despite not providing medical coverage within Australia, domestic travel insurance is important for providing you with coverage for situations such as trip cancellation, lost or stolen luggage and personal belongings, trips disrupted by natural disasters, and more.

For full details of the benefits, terms and conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions that may apply, please refer to the relevant Combined Financial Service Guide and Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

Duty to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation

Submitted by webellian on Tue, 11/28/2023 - 13:51

Duty to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation

Under the Insurance Contracts Act 1984 (Cth) (Act), you have a duty to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation to us.

This duty applies whenever you enter into, renew, extend or vary this contract of insurance.

In all cases, we will ask you questions that are relevant to our decision to insure you and on what terms.

It is important that you understand you are answering our questions in this way for yourself and anyone else that you want to be covered by the contract.

When you answer the questions you must give a true and accurate account of matters. Your response should tell us everything that you know about the question because your response is relevant to whether we offer you insurance and the terms we offer you.

A misrepresentation made fraudulently is made in breach of the duty to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation.

Circumstances relevant to your duty

Whether or not you took reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation will be determined with regard to all the relevant circumstances.

If we know, or ought to know about your particular characteristics or circumstances, we will consider these to determine if you took reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation to us.

We may consider the following matters to determine if you took reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation to us:

  • the type of insurance contract in question, and its target market
  • explanatory material or publicity produced or authorised by us
  • how clear, and how specific, the questions we asked were
  • how clearly we communicated to you the importance of answering those questions and the possible consequences of failing to do so
  • whether or not an agent/insurance broker was acting for you, or
  • whether the contract was a new contract or was being renewed, extended, varied or reinstated.

You are not to be taken to have made a misrepresentation merely because you:

  • failed to answer a question, or
  • gave an obviously incomplete or irrelevant answer to a question.

Consequences if you fail to take reasonable care and do make a misrepresentation

If you do not take reasonable care when answering our questions and the result is you do make a misrepresentation to us, we may cancel your contract or reduce the amount we will pay you if you make a claim, or both.

If your failure to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation to us is fraudulent, we may refuse to pay a claim and treat the contract as if it never existed.

6 Simple ways to save on travel insurance

We all have to work within a budget – and sometimes, saving as much as possible is ideal, especially since it means we can spend more on the holiday itself! How can you save on your travel insurance costs, while still providing yourself with the cover you need?

1. Shop around: If you were buying a car, would you just go to one car dealer and buy the first thing you see? Probably not, travel insurance is the same! Make sure you shop around for your travel insurance and request multiple quotes before you make your decision. Buying travel insurance direct from an online supplier can sometime be much cheaper.

2. Increase your excesses: An excess is the amount you have to pay when you make a claim. Increasing or doubling your excesses is a good way to save on your insurance now, but only if you’re confident you can cover your excesses later on if you get into an accident. Alternatively, if you are taking a high risk holiday (e.g. skiing), you might be able to remove your excesses completely, pay a little more now – and save your money if an accident/emergency occurs.

3. Opt for multi-trip packages: Planning to travel multiple times throughout the year? If so, a combined multi-trip travel insurance package is probably ideal for you. This can provide you with continual cover for your trips and can save you lots, since you won’t have to buy a brand new policy every time you need to travel.

4. Look for discounts: Discounts and promotions are one of the best ways to save on travel insurance! Keep an eye out for coupons and codes for your chosen travel insurance providers or sign up to their newsletters and follow them on social media to gain access to specific customer deals.

5. Be honest: If you’re not, it’ll cost you! If you are dishonest on your insurance application and end up making a claim later on, the insurance company will discover your lies. They’ll also reject your claim, meaning you’ll be responsible for paying any outstanding costs. Not a great way to save!

6. Don’t under-insure: Under-insuring your holiday is one of the most common ways that travellers lose money. Make sure you’re covered for all your destinations and activities. If you make a claim and discover you’re not covered, you’ll have to pay the costs out of your own pocket. That’s not a saving at all!
