Luggage Cover FAQs
Will delayed baggage be covered?

If you choose a Silver or Gold policy, delayed baggage is covered§. We’ll reimburse the reasonable cost of essential items if your baggage is delayed by an airline or transport provider for more than 8 hours during your trip.

With a Silver policy, you can claim up to $500, available for delays of 24–72 hours.

With a Gold policy, you can claim up to $750, including up to $200 for delays of 8–24 hours and up to $500 for delays of 24–72 hours.

You must get written confirmation of the length of the delay from your airline or transport company and keep the receipts for any personal items you buy.

Is high-value sports gear covered?

Standard luggage cover includes sports equipment, but breakage while using the equipment isn’t covered. If you want additional protection for winter sports equipment, you can add the Winter Sports Cover, which includes cover for breakage while in use, up to the limits shown in the Table of Benefits§.

Are drones covered while flying?

No. Drones and other unmanned flying objects are not covered for breakage or scratching while they are being used. You may be covered if the drone is lost or stolen during your trip, but not for damage that happens while it’s in operation.

What if I have no receipt?

If your belongings are lost, stolen or damaged, you must be able to provide proof of ownership. The insurer is under no obligation to make a payment without evidence that the item belonged to you.

For delayed baggage expenses or for replacing travel money or documents, you must keep receipts and proof of the costs incurred. You must also provide proof of ownership for any stolen personal money before a claim can be paid.

What if my belongings are left unattended?

Your belongings won’t be covered if they’re left unattended, for example, in a public place or with someone you don’t know.

However, this exclusion does not apply if you had to leave your belongings behind due to an unavoidable emergency, such as needing urgent medical assistance that requires you to leave the area immediately.

Start a Claim

Step 1: Report the incident as soon as possible

If your belongings are lost, stolen or damaged, you must get a written report from the relevant authority within 72 hours, or as soon as reasonably practicable.

Written reports could take the form of:

  • the police (for theft or loss), or
  • your airline, transport provider or tour operator (for lost, damaged or delayed baggage).

For delayed baggage, you’ll also need written confirmation of the length of the delay from the airline or transport provider.

Step 2: Keep all supporting documents

Travel Delay Cover | Travel insurance for Travel Delays

Submitted by Claudia on Tue, 02/24/2026 - 05:47

Explore cover options for Travel Delays – cover for essential food, drinks, and accommodation costs if your travel is delayed 12+ hours. Compare travel insurance plans & get a quote now.

How does travel delay cover work?

There’s nothing more frustrating than travel delays. Not only is your trip put on hold, but you may find yourself stuck at an airport for hours – or even needing to spend an extra night or two in a hotel – while you wait to get back into the air.

Travel delay cover included as part of your Silver or Gold travel insurance policy – can help reduce your costs when a pre-booked flight is delayed by more than 12 hours, as long as you checked in at or before the recommended time.

Part of the necessary additional food, drink and accommodation costs you incur as a result of your travel and flight delays may be compensated, so those delays don’t do too much damage to your holiday budget.

Travel Delay cover FAQs
How long before Travel Delay compensation eligibility kicks in?

A Travel Delay must last more than 12 hours on a pre-booked leg of your trip. If the delay reaches 12 hours, we may reimburse your necessary additional meals and accommodation expenses, up to the limits shown in the Table of Benefits, as long as you eventually go on the
holiday.

Sub-limits apply for each completed 12-hour period.

What Travel Delays aren’t covered?

Travel Delay cover doesn’t apply in certain situations. This includes:

  1. Any claim where you are unable to provide appropriate evidence e.g. receipts or bank statements for the additional meals and accommodation expenses being claimed.
  2. Any terrorist act or any loss incurred as a result of any intentional use of military force or other intervention by a government or official authority to intercept, prevent, or mitigate any known or suspected terrorist act.
  3. Missed connecting flights when the scheduled stopover was less than 6 hours. This does not apply to fly through fares.
  4. Delays caused by civil unrest.
  5. Delays caused by a natural disaster (unless you’ve purchased the Natural Disaster Upgrade and it’s shown on your policy schedule).
  6. Delays due to an event the public already knew about when you booked your trip or purchased your policy (whichever happened later).

Limits, sub-limits, exclusions and conditions are outlined in the PDS under “What you are not covered for.”

Do I need receipts to make a Travel Delay claim?

Yes. You must keep all receipts for the additional meals and accommodation expenses you’re claiming, and you must get a written statement from the airline confirming the reason for the delay and how long it lasted.

Claims may not be paid if you’re unable to provide receipts for the expenses incurred.

Does Travel Delay cover apply if I don’t check in on time?

No. You must have checked in for your trip at or before the recommended time to be eligible for Travel Delay cover.

Do I still need to go on my trip to claim for a Travel Delay?

Yes. To be eligible for Travel delay benefits, you must eventually continue with your holiday. The benefit does not apply if you abandon the trip entirely due to the delay.

Am I covered if my travel is delayed because of a health issue?

Cover due to flight delay only applies when a pre-booked leg of your trip is delayed by your airline for more than 12 hours. It doesn’t apply if your travel is delayed because you or a travelling companion become unwell. However, other sections of your policy may help if illness or injury affects your travel plans.
