What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is an insurance policy designed to protect you financially while you’re travelling and to protect the financial investments you’ve made by booking a holiday. While purchasing this type of coverage is not mandatory, the Australian Government strongly advises that all Australian travellers protect themselves, regardless of whether they are travelling.

Such a policy is an essential tool designed to help protect you from financial losses that can be incurred from a wide range of factors. These factors include (but are not limited to) the need to cancel a trip, needing overseas medical treatment, or replacing lost or stolen luggage and personal belongings. When looking for travel insurance, it’s important to obtain insurance quotes from multiple providers. This allows you to compare different policies and choose the one that best meets your needs.

Always read the PDS before making the purchase to ensure the product is right for you.

Important steps to consider before getting a travel insurance quote

The last thing you want is to end up with a policy that doesn’t cover what you need.

So, to get you started, here are a few things you should consider:

1. Check Smartraveller to make sure your destination is safe to visit.

2. Confirm that all people named on the policy are residents of Australia. If you are in Australia on a working holiday VISA, a sponsorship VISA or even a student VISA, it’s important for you to have valid Medicare cover, or private health insurance, for the length of your trip.

3. Make sure you buy your policy before you start your trip. If you buy it after you’ve left it will be invalid.

4. Tell us about your pre-existing medical conditions; we can assess your pre-existing medical conditions and, if approved, offer you cover. It’s really important that you’re open and honest about this because if you don’t declare all pre-existing medical conditions, they may not be covered.

5. Work out if you’re willing to pay an excess. An excess is deducted from any payment we make to you. For example, having a $200 excess reduces your premium, but if you make a claim, $200 would be deducted from any claim payment. Conversely, if you chose to waive the excess, your policy would be more expensive, but you would get 100% of the claim back, provided your claim is approved and does not exceed your policy limits.

Our standard excess amount is $100, but you can decide to remove or double this amount through the purchase process. Find more info about excess here.

6. Read the Product Disclosure Statement. Learning about it now can save you headaches later on. Ready to protect your trip? Get an insurance quote now to find the best travel insurance plan for your needs.

What Does Travel Insurance Cover?**

Overseas emergency medical assistance

Nobody wants to be involved in an emergency while on holiday, but travel doesn’t always go to plan.

Overseas emergency medical assistance provides you with financial assistance if you’re injured or fall sick while travelling overseas.

Having coverage means you’re covered for emergency medical evacuations, surgical and hospital treatments, and ambulance costs.

We will also cover the cost of your return to Australia earlier than planned if this is medically necessary, and we consider all pre-existing medical conditions.

Loss or theft of luggage

It’s extremely inconvenient, not to mention costly if your luggage is lost, stolen, or damaged while you’re travelling.

But with the appropriate cover we will pay for the value of your property at the time it was lost, stolen or damaged.

Remember that all items you are claiming as lost, stolen, or damaged must be reported to the appropriate authority, usually within 24 hours, and you will need to be able to provide proof of ownership.

Loss of cash or travel documents

Losing your cash or travel documents might be your worst nightmare, but with the appropriate policy, we will pay for the cost of replacing your cash or important documents if they are lost, stolen, or damaged during your trip.

This includes your passport, traveller's cheque, and visas.

You may not be covered in situations where your documents or cash were left unattended, and you will need to provide proof of ownership for any lost or stolen personal money.

Travel delay expenses

Travel delays are an unfortunate reality these days.

There are many causes, but the number of global delays per day can often be as high as the tens of thousands.

If you are financially affected by a travel delay of more than 12 hours and are covered for travel delays, we will reimburse the cost of your necessary additional meals and accommodation expenses. Some limits are applied to this, and you will be reimbursed up to the amount shown on your policy.

Rental vehicle excess

Some travellers prefer to hire a car on holiday for the additional freedom.

However, if the car is damaged, stolen, or involved in an accident, you may be responsible for paying the cost of the rental car excess.

We will reimburse the rental car insurance excess if a car you have rented during your trip is involved in a motor vehicle accident while you are driving or is damaged or stolen while in your custody.

Please note that rental vehicle excess is available on Silver and Gold level cover up to the amount shown on your policy.

Cancelling or rescheduling travel plans

We hope that your trip goes ahead as planned, but sometimes things go wrong, and you may need to cancel.

An insurance policy that includes cancellation cover will mean you are reimbursed for the cost of flights, accommodation, visas and paid for excursions or activities in the event that you need to cancel your travel plans due to injury, unforeseen illness overseas, or because of other reasons that are outlined in the PDS.

We will also cover the cost of rescheduling your trip prior to departure if the cost of rescheduling does not exceed the cost of the cancellation.

**Terms, conditions, exclusions, sub-limits, and/or limits apply. For full details and before making a decision, consider the relevant PDS.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a claim?

You can either lodge a claim online or download a claims form from the website and post it to us with all your supporting documents (e.g. receipts, police reports). We aim to give you a response within 10 business days of us receiving your documentation.

Please contact us if you have any questions regarding the claims process.

Claims should be registered within 30 days of completing your travel, or as soon as reasonably practicable.

Why travel insurance is important for my trip?

Travel insurance can help manage unexpected costs that may arise during your journey, particularly overseas medical expenses, which can be significant in some countries. It can also assist with other unforeseen events such as trip cancellations, lost or delayed baggage, and travel disruptions due to natural disasters or emergencies, and can offer a layer of financial support when plans change unexpectedly.

The Australian Government or Medicare won’t be able to help you with overseas medical expenses. While Australia has several reciprocal healthcare agreements with other nations, these do not provide financial assistance for medical repatriation back to Australia to receive treatment.

Some countries might ask you for a copy of your insurance before granting travel visa applications. Visit Smart Traveller for country-specific requirements before applying for a visa.

Despite not providing medical coverage within Australia, domestic travel insurance is important for providing you with coverage for situations such as trip cancellation, lost or stolen luggage and personal belongings, trips disrupted by natural disasters, and more.

For full details of the benefits, terms and conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions that may apply, please refer to the relevant Combined Financial Service Guide and Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

Does travel insurance cover pregnancy?

The policy can provide cover for unlimited medical, hospital and surgical coverage for an insured person as a result of complications of pregnancy prior to the 31st week of pregnancy.

If you become pregnant after you purchase the policy, it can also provide cover for cancelling your trip prior to departure if you will me more than 30 weeks pregnant (if you are expecting one baby), or 20 weeks pregnant if you are expecting more than one baby.

Please keep in mind that no cover is available for children who are born overseas during your trip.

For full details of the benefits, terms and conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions that may apply, please refer to the relevant Combined Financial Service Guide and Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

What does Cancellation Cover Mean?

Cancellation cover, in terms of travel insurance, means that if something goes wrong and it is necessary and unavoidable to cancel your trip before you head off, you may be able to claim back money you otherwise have lost (up to the amount stated in your insurance policy).
Cancellation can provide cover for the cost of cancelled flights, hotels, visas, tours/excursions, paid-for activities or sports, prepaid meals that are non-refundable, up to the amounts specified in your policy, and less any applicable excess.

If you booked your trip through a travel agency and they charged you fees, you might be able to claim back some of these costs too, depending on your policy.

For full details of the benefits, terms and conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions that may apply, please refer to the relevant Combined Financial Service Guide and Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

Can I get cover for pre-existing medical conditions?

Pre-existing medical conditions aren’t automatically covered, but they can be considered via the medical assessment. You can complete this assessment online during the quotation process or speak with our team over the phone.

A pre-existing medical condition refers to any diagnosed medical condition for which you or any insured person has suffered from or has received any form of medical advice, treatment or medication in the past 5 years.

To determine if your condition can be covered, simply complete the Medical Assessment. If you prefer to do this over the phone, our team is happy to assist.

For full details of the benefits, terms and conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions that may apply, please refer to the relevant Combined Financial Service Guide and Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

Children aged 17 or under can be included at no extra cost** when travelling with a parent or grandparent on eligible policies. Those aged 18 and over are considered adults for policy purposes, regardless of whether they’re part of a couple or family policy^.

For full details of the benefits, terms and conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions that may apply, please refer to the relevant Combined Financial Service Guide and Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

When should I buy Travel Insurance?

Coverage for cancelling your trip prior to departure starts once you purchase the policy.

Cancellation cover (if included as part of your cover) can help you recover your non-refundable prepaid travel costs if you need to cancel for a coverable reason before your journey begins.

If you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, your prepaid travel costs, such as flights, accommodation, and tours, may be reimbursed. Covered reasons can include things like redundancy, natural disaster (If you have purchased he applicable add-on), pregnancy-related complications, serious illness or injury, significant damage to your home in Australia, or the death of a travelling companion or a relative living in Australia.

For full details of the benefits, terms and conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions that may apply, please refer to the relevant Combined Financial Service Guide and Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

What is the Excess on My Travel Insurance Policy?

Excess is the amount of money you agree to pay should the unfortunate happen, and you need to make a claim to your insurer. It applies per person, per event and per applicable section of your policy.

For example, if your excess is $100 and you make a successful claim for a doctor’s bill, $100 will be deducted from the total amount paid.

Our standard excess amount is $100, but you can choose to remove or double this amount through the quotation process, depending on your preferences.

For full details of the benefits, terms and conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions that may apply, please refer to the relevant Combined Financial Service Guide and Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

What is a PDS, and why is it important to read it?

A Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) is a legal document that outlines the key features, benefits, limitations, sub-limits, and conditions of your travel insurance policy. It also explains your rights and responsibilities as a policyholder.

Reading the PDS can help you understand what is and isn’t covered and help you choose the policy that is right for you. Within the PDS, you will find details on excesses, premiums, coverage limits, exclusions, and optional upgrades.

For full details of the benefits, terms and conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions that may apply, please refer to the relevant Combined Financial Service Guide and Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
