Volcanic Eruption and Tsunami in Indonesia: where to now?

If you’re currently affected by the volcanic eruption and resulting tsunami affecting Indonesia’s Sunda Straits, Pandeglang, South Lampung, and Serang regions, then please read these FAQs – if after reading you’re still unsure about your situation, please get in touch.

There has been a tsunami which was caused by the eruption of the volcano Anak Krakatau. This has had catastrophic effects on parts of Indonesia, particularly in the Sunda Straits, Pandeglang, South Lampung, and Serang regions. There may be further activity from Anak Krakatau, which could cause more devastating tsunamis. These are considered known events from 24th of December 2018, at 12:30am (AEST) and therefore, any claims arising from these events are not covered.

Am I covered for the Anak Krakatau volcanic eruptions and resulting tsunamis?

  • If you purchased your policy after 12:30am (AEST) on 24th of December 2018 you are not covered for claims arising from the Anak Krakatau volcanic eruptions and resulting tsunamis, even if you purchased natural disaster cover as an add on to your policy.
  • If you purchased your policy before 12:30am (AEST) on 24th of December 2018 you are covered for claims arising from the Anak Krakatau volcanic eruptions and resulting tsunamis, provided that you purchased natural disaster cover as an add on to your policy.

Please note: medical expenses incurred due to natural disasters are automatically covered in all international policies, without having to purchase the natural disaster cover option.
