Travel Tips For Seniors

Travel Tips For Seniors

Compared to other age groups, seniors travel quite a bit, largely due to the fact that you are time rich. If you are thinking about your next trip it might pay to take some time to think carefully about how you intend to budget for your trip. Here are a few we have handpicked to get you started.

Take Advantage of Discount Tours for Seniors

A lot of tour operators offer discounts for seniors. Taking advantage of these discounts could save you a fair amount of money. Even if tour operators do not publicly state that they offer discounts, it never hurts to ask.  Discounts are also becoming more and more common for senior singles.  I have seen many of the more well known companies offering singles great deals with no single supplements. These tend to be at the last minute when they are trying to fill distressed capacity.

Go Traveling with a Group

Traveling in a group can help you save money. Group tour companies can offer great deals simply due to the fact that they received their own bulk buying discounts on rooms and travel attractions.  You may also find you enjoy yourself more, meeting new friends with similar interests.

Visit Places off the Beaten Path

Many seniors travel to high profile places that tend to get mentioned a lot in guidebooks and magazines. But you can save a substantial amount of money and have a very good time if you visit places that aren’t necessarily very high profile.

Another advantage of visiting lesser known places is that they tend to have fewer tourists. You will get more of a chance to learn about the locals and how they live their lives. Ultimately, it will probably be a more authentic travel experience than visiting a very high-profile area packed with hordes of tourists.

Look for Travel Magazine and Newspaper Offers

You can often get reduced rates at hotels if you find ads for them in a travel magazine like Get Up and Go (a travel publication for seniors) or the Sunday papers. Most travel magazines carry lots of inserts with offers for discounted travel accommodations. While you might not be able to find some reduced rate hotels that work with your travel plans, it’s certainly worth trying.

Read Reviews Online

Online reviews of popular travel destinations are a great way to find inexpensive travel locales that will help make for a satisfying trip. Tons of sites offer different reviews from varied travellers, so there is no shortage of reviews available. Of course, not all reviews are created equal, but you can easily find a lot of valuable, cost-saving information by digging through them.

Take Advantage of Seasonal Fluctuations in Prices

The cost of staying in different locations often varies dramatically throughout the year. Plan your trip so that you can stay in a place when it is least expensive to stay there. Unless you are still working full time, it shouldn’t be that much of an issue.

Plus, if you go to a place during the off season, you will often get to enjoy more peace and quiet. It’s really a win-win situation.  Travel outside of peak periods and school holidays and you will save substantially.  Also, why would you want to travel in extreme heat, for example in Europe!  Spring and Autumn is a great experience and much cheaper.
