City introduction

Mykonos is a Greek island situated in the Mediterranean Sea. The island has only 10 000 inhabitants but the number increases significantly during the summer when tourists from all over the world visit the island. Tourism is the major industry, with tourists attracted to the island hoping to experience the beauty of the Greek archipelago.

Transport

There is one airport on the island, Mykonos Airport, situated 4km outside the city of Mykonos. The easiest way to go to the different parts of the island is by bus or by taxi if you are staying in the city. There are few international flights going directly to Mykonos, so you will have to get a transfer flight in Athens. The flight is only 45 minutes and runs several times daily. During summertime many European countries have direct charter flights with Mykonos.

Cruise ships can take you to other Greek islands or to surrounding countries.  During summertime there are frequent departures to all close destinations since the tourism increases significantly during this period. There are three ports, one near the town; one located 10 km north of the town and the third one only operating the route to Delos Island.

For local transportation a taxi is also a preferred alternative. The prices are fixed so take a look at the taxi square to identify the price of your destination. The taxi square is at the main square of the island, next to the statue of Manto Mavrogenenous.

If you want to travel by bus, there are two major stations where buses depart for routes to the whole island. The south station is situated in the square Fabrika and the north station is located behind the archaeological museum.

Places to visit

  • Little Venice – spectacular buildings constructed right on the shore. The balconies of the houses are hanging over the water and create a beautiful setting.
  • Petros the Pelican – this is the mascot for Mykonos, the islands “celebrity”. The first pelican came to the island in 1958 but after his death he was replaced by several other birds. The port is a great place to go for an ice cream during lazy afternoons.
  • Windmills of Mykonos – the most famous landmarks of Mykonos and symbols for the island. The windmills are often pictured on post cards and a must for tourists to visit.
  • Archaeological Museum – with great pieces of sculptures and other goods from the region. Visit Aegean Maritime Museum to see ships and receive information about the maritime history of Mykonos.

Leisure and activities

  • Beaches – The island offers beautiful beaches and this is the main attraction. There are beaches that attract different kinds of people. Some are for nudists and some are known as gay beaches.
  • Walking tours – go on a guided walking tour in Old Town and see the historical heritage of Greece.
  • Delos Island – visit the island during the day and see the House of Cleopatra and the house of Dionysus. If you go on a guided tour it is common to visit the Agora, the Sacred Way and the Temple of Apollo, which are all spectacular historical sites.
  • Boat trip – go away to a neighbouring island and see as much of Greece as possible during your stay.

Places to eat

The Greek cuisine can best be experienced in Taverns in different villages around the island. Tzatsiki, Mousakka and Greek salad are some of the specialties that are served in almost every Greek restaurant.  Even if the prices are known to be high it is possible to find some taverns with cheaper food, which are often packed with locals. The prices increase remarkably during the tourist season, both for fine dining and cheaper taverns. Many restaurants overlook the ocean with spectacular sunsets, but keep in mind that some restaurants have higher prices to compensate for their location and not the quality of the food.

Even if the island offers a wide range of cuisines the Greek food is the best, after all you are in the country of its origin. There is often live music at the typical Greek taverns, which brings both locals and tourists together. The traditional dance of Zorba is a must try, the locals will appreciate your efforts.

Nightlife

Mykonos is known for its nightlife with many bars and nightclubs. Some people describe the island as a smaller version of Ibiza with all kinds of entertainment. The nightlife has something to offer for all ages and music tastes. Even if there are bars in several towns on the island, the major city Mykonos is the best place to go for a night out. During summertime some of the worlds most famous DJs visit the island and people party until early in the morning.

There are often beach parties with flaming torches and bonfires where everybody is welcome.

If you prefer a more relaxing night out some bars offer beautiful views over the Mediterranean Sea where you can watch the sunset whilst sipping a tasty beverage.

Mykonos for kids

Of course swimming and playing on the beach are the most popular activities for kids in Mykonos. If you want to do something else for a day, visit the windmills of Kato Myli where you can take a close look at the mechanics or go to the Aegean Maritime Museum, which is suitable for children all ages. Many hotels also offer special kids clubs with plenty of fun activities that will keep them occupied for hours.
