9 Concert Venues That Almost Show Up the Show!

What’s your fave concert spot? And how does it compare to these magnificent settings? From Sweden to Oman, we take a look at some stunning venues that are almost more dazzling than the shows they put on!

1. Dalhalla, Rättvik, Sweden

Dalhalla, Rättvik, Sweden

Situated in an old limestone quarry, this sunken amphitheatre is surrounded by gorgeous cliffs and the forests of central Sweden, and gives off gorgeous acoustics.

It’s been open since 1995 and is home to regular concerts throughout the Swedish summer. A restaurant and a range of accommodation options are also located nearby.

2. Théâtre Antique d’Orange, Orange, France

Théâtre Antique d’Orange, Orange, France

Southern France is a glorious wonder to explore on any holiday, but if you’re in Orange, a show at this ancient roman theatre, with its origins in the 1st centuryAD, is a must.

The upcoming line-up for 2015 includes the Roman Legions re-enactment and a David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd) concert.

3. Bethlehem SteelStacks, Bethlehem, US

Bethlehem SteelStacks, Bethlehem, US

It was once one of the largest steel sites in America, producing up to 3,000 tonnes of iron per day. Today, it’s a radical venue that is home to a huge range of concerts, plays, films and festivals.

You’ll find this cool stack in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which is about an 80 min drive north of Philadelphia.

4. Ermita de la Santa Cruz, Antigua, Guatemala

Ermita de la Santa Cruz, Antigua, Guatemala

Originally built in 1664, this beautifully ancient church sits in Antigua and acts as an exquisite backdrop to a range of concerts and plays.

It’s been destroyed by earthquakes a couple of times throughout the ages, so the version you see today is the one that has been restored from ruins. Still pretty awesome, right?

5. Slane Castle, Slane, Ireland

Slane Castle, Slane, Ireland

Rather see your next concert in the presence of a real life castle? Gorgeous, sloping lawns and views over the River Boyne make this venue an absolute stand-out. The biggest acts in music from the Rolling Stones to David Bowie to Madonna have all had a go here.

If you decide to catch a gig at this amazing spot in summer, we also recommend partaking in the castle tour, which operates Sunday through Thursday.

6. Wiener Musikverein, Vienna, Austria

Wiener Musikverein, Vienna, Austria

Regal. Magnificent. Dazzling. If you’ve ever been to a concert at the Musikverein in Vienna, you’ll know just fitting these descriptions are!

The seat of the famed Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, this concert hall is known for its amazing acoustics as well as its beautiful ceilings, sculptures, boxes and lighting. Add this place to your Vienna itinerary.

7. The Gorge Amphitheatre, George, Washington

The Gorge Amphitheatre, George, Washington

Washington state has some of the most striking scenery in the US and so it’s no surprise that this space overlooking the Columbia River is one of our favourites!

Upcoming events include the Dave Matthews Band and the Foo Fighters, and camping nearby is recommended for a most memorable concert experience. You can get to The Gorge by driving about 2.5 hours east of Seattle.

8. The Royal Opera House, Muscat, Oman

The Royal Opera House, Muscat, Oman

One of the most stunning yet humble places to visit, Oman is a rare gem in the Middle East. Its Royal Opera House is a fairly new addition to the city of Muscat and opened in 2011, but I think we can all agree it’s a breath-taker.

If you adore opera and the arts, make sure you catch a show here. Opera House tours also operate daily from 8.30-10.30am.

9. Cumberland Caverns, McMinnville, US

Cumberland Caverns, McMinnville, US

If you’re keen to see a show in an underground cave, here’s your chance. Down in Tennessee, this beautiful cave system is 32 miles long and has its very own dedicated cave venue – the Bluegrass Underground.

Of course, touring, caving, camping and kayaking are all possible at the caves too. We dare you to combine adventure and music into one!
