Apps are a dime a dozen these days – and when they’re good, they can truly enrich your travel experiences! But how do you weed out the magnificent apps from the mediocre ones.

Below, InsureandGo take a look at six apps that we reckon will enhance your next travel journey. Try them and let us know what you think!

  • Visual appeal: 5/5

HotelTonight allows you to find hotel rooms in a multitude of destinations around the world, which you can book at a cheap rate for tonight, tomorrow or up to a week in advance.

We love this free app because it also appeals to our sense of adventure and the idea of making your holiday up as you go along, without having to plan weeks in advance.

The US is a big place, and if you’re heading there for a once-in-a-lifetime all American road trip, or similar, get Roadtrippers.

  • Visual appeal: 3/5

If your next big holiday involves discovering your homeland, WikiCamps Australia is a must! It’ll cost you around $7.99 to download, but it’s a great tool if you want to camp or explore on the cheap.

This crowdsourced app will tell you exactly where to find camping sites, caravan parks, hostels and dump points, as well as where info centres, points of interest and day stops are located.

Additional features let you filter your searches, download content for offline viewing, look at user photos, and even chat with others. And of course, you can also book any site or room you find.

Location sharing: Glympse

  • Ease of use: 4/5
  • Useful info: 4/5
  • Visual appeal: 3/5

Meeting up with others while overseas? Want to keep track of the people you are travelling with (like your partner or kids)? Or simply need to let your friends and family back home know where you are?

Glympse lets you share your location via GPS so that others can see exactly where you are, on a map, in real-time.

You can set destinations for meet-ups, send messages, and even request the location of your contacts if you want to find out where they are or how long they’ll be.

On top of all that, you can also set favourite ‘Glympses’, see your ‘sharing’ history, set up groups, link the app to your calendar or online accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Evernote), and decide exactly what info you want to share and for how long.

Travel advice for Aussies: Smartraveller

  • Ease of use: 4/5
  • Useful info: 5/5
  • Visual appeal: 2/5

Keeping up to date with news and information about your travel destinations is essential when heading abroad.

You can use the free Smartraveller app to register your travel plans (recommended for all Australian travellers), look up advice and warnings about your destinations, find info about travel insurance and travelling in general, and check you’ve got everything in order before you go.

The feature we love most about this app is the ability to look up information on emergency numbers, police stations and embassy locations for each country you visit (to find this info, look up your country first and then scroll down to the ‘Where to get help’ link).

If you have access to Wi-Fi, the app will also pick up on your GPS location and display any travel advice/warnings for the place you’re in. Pretty smart, hey?
