Thong wearers fined in Darwin
The relaxed dress code of Darwin is being challenged by one disgruntled restaurant owner, The Times has reported.
John Spellman, who manages 60-seater Italian restaurant Tramontana, has introduced a $10 surcharge for customers wishing to dine in his establishment whilst wearing thongs.
“I’m sick of explaining to people how to dress so I figured if I just put a ‘thongage’ on the bill there’d be no complaints,” he said.
“Girls get dressed up and put on nice clothes on, but some of the blokes come in wearing thongs and a t-shirt like they’re going to go and clean the car after dinner.”
Tramontana is one of a handful of Darwin establishments to have taken action against fans of the popular footwear, with the SkyCity casino banning thong-wearers from entering.
Casual clothing is usually a practical option in Darwin, due to the city’s warm, tropical climate.
