New routes for Melbourne
Passenger numbers at Melbourne Airport are set to be boosted by new services from carrier Air Asia, The Independent has reported.
Twice daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Melbourne will begin on July 1st, along with a new service to Perth, thus doubling the number of daily services that currently operate.
A new route was also launched last month by V Australia between Johannesburg and Melbourne, while Qantas unveiled plans last year to fly the A380 superjumbo between London and Melbourne.
Melbourne Airport has continued to see growth throughout the economic downturn, with international passenger traffic rising eight per cent between 2008 and 2009.
However, passenger numbers are still significantly lower than those at Sydney International Airport, which handled 10.5 million visitors in 2009 compared to Melbourne’s five million.
