Melbourne voted most popular domestic destination

When it comes to taking a domestic holiday, the most popular destination amongst Australians is Melbourne, The Herald Sun has reported.

According to a study by Ray Morgan Research, 21 per cent of Australians intend to take a holiday in Melbourne in the next two years.

19 per cent of the 20,000 Australians polled opted for the Gold Coast, 13 per cent chose the Sunshine Coast, and 12 per cent answered that a trip to Sydney was on the cards.

Jane Ianiello, Ray Morgan Research’s international director of tourism, travel and leisure, commented, “It’s so cheap and easy to get to Melbourne because of the discounted airfares, and Tourism Victoria has done an incredible job in marketing Melbourne.”

Sporting events, cultural attractions, shopping and fine dining were also cited as reasons for Melbourne’s popularity.
