Health and safety overhaul for Sydney Opera House

Action is being taken to reduce the number of tourists involved in accidents at the iconic Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Morning Herald has reported.

&152 million has been allocated for the safety plan, which should reduce the number of visitors hit by trucks on the venue’s forecourt by diverting large vehicles elsewhere.

Richard Evans, Opera House CEO, commented, “Anyone who spends any time at the Opera House and here on the forecourt is aware of the multiple incidents that happen here on a daily basis.”

According to Premier Kristina Keneally, around 1000 heavy vehicle movements occur each week on the forecourt, and a network of underground tunnels will be built in an effort to bring numbers down.

“This is unquestionably the most significant building of the 20th century, and the work we are doing will ensure that it stays that way,” she said.
